The Curtain Society: Life Is Long, Still

If the lingering presence of "delicate" in my description continues to worry you, another step along the continuum toward more familiar territory brings us to the reverb-drunk Boston trio The Curtain Society, who exist perched precariously on the border between Boston's fanatically cohesive neo-gothic underground (definitively represented on the Castle Von Buhler AIDS-benefit compilations Soon and Anon) and its loud-guitars rock-club "alternative" mainstream.

Everyone deserves a second chance. That includes bands.
When drummer Duncan Arsenault first heart the Curtain Society at the Worcester Artist Group in the late '80s, he wasn't impressed.
"I really thought they sucked," he said during a recent interview, causing bandmates Roger Lavallee (vocals, guitar) and Ron Mominee (bass, backing vocals) to break into laughter.

The Noise - Amy Lordan

I am being crushed. Yes, I am being crushed at a Curtain Society show. This experience is a new one. I am having flashbacks to the Nine Inch Nails concert where I left in an ambulance. I strain to see Roger Lavallee, vocalist and guitarist for the group, as his muddled vocals reach my ears. The sound is definitely not up to par on "Kissherface," found on their album, Inertia. As I listen, bassist Ron Mominee's backing vocals trample over Lavallee's. I am bothered. I like this band and the poor sound quality is not going to win over the Legendary Pink Dots fans who crowd the room. Fortunately, the sound problems are remedied and I enjoy the rest of The Curtain Society's set, as usual. As smile spreads across my face. "Ferris Wheel," also from their album, is great and I can see Duncan Arsenault's cap along with a couple cymbals during my favorite part of "Love Ends".
